ATHENS CITY GUIDE

This vibrant city holds a special place in our heart.

The backdrop to our first Greek edition, ATHINA, celebrates the burgeoning new-wave of creatives that have taken hold of Athens breathing new life, whilst honoring its heritage.

Here is our guide to uncovering some of the best of what this magical city has to offer.

STAY

10AM LOFTS

Athens creative and entrepreneur Eva Papadaki is behind 10AM lofts which has been designed by interior-architect Andrew Trotter of Studio Andrew Trotter and Elini of Gavalas Ioannidou Architecture. A recent edition to her 10AM stable (10AM Apotheke & 10AM artist management) the penthouse provides a spacious split level apartment with bedroom views to the Acropolis. Keep an eye out for the regular schedule of chef pop-ups in the 10AM Apotheke space downstairs and peruse the curated collection of sense-driven, hand-crafted home objects and body products, all made in Greece.

EAT

Linou Soumpbasis and Sia

A Michelin– approved eatery, located in
the suburb of Psiri, the nightlife and culture quarter of Athens.

With its minimalist aesthetic, (exceptional) share-style dining, and modern interpretations of Greek classics using only the freshest ingredients to prepare everything in house, it captures the essence of the “New Athens”, while still honouring traditional Greek cuisine. The space is illuminated by sweet smelling beeswax candles you find in Greek churches, available to purchase.

Taverna ton Filon

The nostalgic warmth of Taverna ton Filon, is at the heart of the city’s “New Wave”,
a culinary and cultural revival that reinterprets traditional flavours with bold simplicity, celebrating the spirit of yiayia while ushering in a new, Mediterranean modernism, filled with so much warmth and love.

Diporto

An underground traditional taverna that dates back to 1887 that is like stepping back into time. You enter via some steep stone steps, the cellar-like room, with concrete floors, wooden wine barrels lining the wall, old antique marble sinks, aluminium wine jugs, evokes nostalgia. There’s no printed menu, Mitsos the owner who has been operating it since his youth, will serve you about 5-6 dishes of the day along with house wine which is typically retsina, a dry white wine served by the kilo in aluminium jugs. Bread is simply placed on your table covered in a sheet of butcher’s paper. Perfect.

*Diporto does not take reservations.

DRINK

Kennedy Vins

A chic and intimate wine and listening bar founded by photographer and music aficionado Chris Kontos and his wife Athina Delyannis. A place with soul, specialising in natural wine from small French producers, you’ll find a rotating menu complemented by a small snack menu featuring quality chacuterie and canned delicacies. Often Chris will be spinning CDs and vinyl from his extensive personal collection

Wine is Fine

Part of the Athens “new wave “dining scene, an intimate wine bar/bistro with nostalgic 90s charm and Parisian vibe. Think natural and low-intervention wines primarily from France and Greece, a  concise seasonally inspired menu, outdoor seating with tables dressed in white tablecloths, with a communal feeling. You’ll find a mix of locals and travellers.

Rooftop at Hotel Grand Bretange

A last-night-in-Greece ritual that we highly recommend.

Enjoy a martini at sunset, as you look directly out to the Acropolis and be mesmerised by the antiquity of Athens.

VISIT

Benaki Museum

We keep going back to the Benaki Museum in Athens and discovering new things, it is full of antiquity. It’s extraordinary to think
that the Greeks were making these exquisite pieces of pottery and jewellery thousands of years ago. Benaki is a limitless source of inspiration for our ceramic and jewellery collections.

Alekos Fassianos Museum

We love the work of artist Alekos Fassionis (1935-2022). The museum is housed in a
building that originally stood on the site of Fassianos’ childhood home- a neoclassical house.

One of Greece’s most beloved modern painters, his work is distinctive.
We’re drawn to the strong Greek identity expressed through his works, often you
will notice Byzantine icons, folk traditions, blended with modern life in Athens. We love the bold use of colour in deep blues, terracotta, golden ochres, reflecting the Mediterranean landscape.

A day trip to Hydra

Catch the ferry from Piraeus and spend a day in Hydra or a night or more. Soak up the sun and take a deep dive into the Aegean Sea.

Some of our favourite swim spots include Hydronetta and Avlaki.

Lunch
at To Pefkaki and Marina’s Taverna.

Sunset
drinks at Hydranetta and Windmill

Dinner
at Ostria
